Jeju Island, dubbed as the “Island of the Gods,” is located on the southern coast of the Korean peninsula. The popular tourist destination has become well-known for its beautifully natural landscapes, its delicious food, unique dialect, and the picturesque beaches! As it is usually seen as a place to unwind and relax, you might not have realized that numerous of our favorite K-pop idols, who radiate “city” vibes, were originally from the Island!

With that, here are some of the K-pop idols who are originally from Jeju Island!

1. iKON Jay

iKON Jay

iKON member Jay (formerly Jinhwan) was born in Jeju Island and spent his childhood growing up there until he moved to Seoul to become an idol trainee. He even showed off his Jeju Island roots on broadcast, where he visited his hometown along with his fellow iKON members. While Jay moved to Seoul to become an idol, his family still lives in Jeju Island, where his mother owns her own café.

Red Velvet Joy’s background is not as well-known due to her having grown up in Seoul, thus making her quite the city girl. But the “Feel My Rhythm” singer actually hailed from Jeju Island, her birth place! However, Joy has stated in the past that she does not remember much about having lived in Jeju Island due to her moving at such a young age.

3. WJSN Dayoung

WJSN (also known as Cosmic Girls) member Dayoung hails from Jeju Island, and has even spoken in Jeju dialect on various TV appearances. She even spoke about the hardships she faced during her childhood while living in Jeju Island, when her house was once flooded by a typhoon that hit the Island.

4. Former SISTAR Soyou

Former SISTAR member Soyou was born on Jeju Island, where she lived until she was nine years old before officially moving to the big city. She even spoke of her childhood on broadcast on mulitle occassions, and even sang a remake of the song “The Blue Night of Jeju Island.”

Seungkwan has expressed his love for Jeju Island numerous times, having been born and raised here before being scouted by Pledis Entertainment in 2012. In fact, Seungkwan’s surname, Boo, originates from Jeju Island, and only around 10,000 people in Korea have such a surname. He has also showcased his Jeju dialect to fans on several occassions, such as reinterpreting songs in Jeju dialect.

Another Pledis Entertainment idol who hails from Jeju Island is former NU’EST member Baekho! Baekho was born in Jeju Island and spent most of his childhood there up until high school. He left Jeju Island when he got a casting call after accompanying a friend to an audition for Mnet’s Superstar K. He has revealed in the past that he still takes time to visit his hometown to get inspiration for songwriting.

Rookie idol Liz was born in Jeju Island, where she spent most of her childhood in. In fact, she already knew she wanted to pursue a career as a singer an even trained at the Jeju Hallyu Training Center. She was even part of KBS’ Jeju Broadcast Choir. She only moved to the city in 2019 when she got casted by Starship Entertainment. Liz would even show off her Jeju dialect on broadcast!
